Sorrento to Amalfi by bus

The blue SITA bus is the cheapest way along the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento. It is also the most crowded. Here is how it works and when a tour is worth the difference.

SITA SUD buses leave from outside Sorrento's Circumvesuviana station and follow the coast road to Positano and Amalfi. On a quiet day it is a bargain with a view. On a summer morning it can mean queues, a full bus and standing on the bends.

The quick answer

A 24-hour COSTIERASITA ticket costs EUR 10 (EUR 12 including Positano's local buses) and must be bought before boarding, at tabacchi, newsstands, bars or the station. Sorrento to Amalfi takes about 1 hour 35 minutes. It is the cheapest option by far, but there is no guide, no pickup, and summer buses fill quickly.

How much is the bus from Sorrento to Amalfi?

A 24-hour COSTIERASITA ticket costs EUR 10, or EUR 12 including Positano's local buses.

Single tickets by distance are also sold. For a day of hopping between Positano and Amalfi, the 24-hour ticket is the simplest choice.

Where do you buy SITA bus tickets?

Before you board: at tabacchi, newsstands, bars and cafes, or the ticket office at Sorrento's Circumvesuviana station.

Tickets are not sold on the bus. Validate your ticket when you board, and keep it: inspectors do check.

How long does the bus take?

About 35 to 60 minutes to Positano and about 1 hour 35 minutes to Amalfi, before traffic.

In July and August, traffic around Positano and Amalfi can add a lot more. Buses run from early morning; in 2026 the last departures from Sorrento are in the early evening, so check the timetable for your return.

Tours stop at viewpoints; the bus does not.

Which side of the bus should you sit on?

The right-hand side from Sorrento towards Positano and Amalfi, the left-hand side on the way back.

That puts the sea on your side. Board early at Sorrento station, where the bus starts, to get a seat at all.

How crowded is the bus in summer?

Very: in peak season buses can leave full, and passengers further along the route may not get on.

If you board at Sorrento you usually get on, but not always a seat. Coming back from Amalfi or Positano in the late afternoon is harder, with long queues. Build in time, or take the ferry back in season.

Can you combine the bus and the ferry?

Yes, and many independent travelers do: bus out along the coast, ferry back to Sorrento from Amalfi or Positano in season.

Ferries run roughly spring to autumn and depend on the sea. It is a good way to see the coast from both sides. For a guided version on the water, see boat or drive.

Prefer it organised? The classic tour includes the Positano to Amalfi boat in season.
